The predominant message in society holds individuals accountable for their health. The two main flaws with this message are first, that most if not all the evidence is only correlation, which does not prove causation. This is not a unique challenge to this research, and it is no ones individual fault that it is attractive to conflate correlation and causation. Related, the evidence that does exist is not designed or reliable to use for individual life choices, so the conclusion that a risk factor in health is something an individual can control in order to improve their health attributes far too much control to that risk factor.
Second, the messages that do get to individuals regarding health and fat do not achieve their goals. There is no proven way to lose weight, there is no proof that losing weight is healthy in the long term, but there is proof that individuals are negatively impacted by unending stress, and there is proof that anti-fat messages from doctors to their patients has strong negative impacts on those individuals.
